Editing for fun
For the new installment of Bonfire’s Soberish History series, I was tasked with editing footage shot by one of my colleagues at Bonfire Effect. Along with needing to be quick about it, we were looking to shorten and speed up the pacing.
Problem / solved
1. Introducing the video editor as a character
- Taking cues from many popular YouTubers, this video introduced an editing style where the editor’s voice and humor come through in the edit.
- This was accomplished with an editor’s note to shorten the series name, bizarre intro songs for each interviewee, and bold irreverent title cards.
2. Watch people not laugh, then fix it
- To achieve the short, punchy tone, we showed the video around to different team members to get blind reactions.
- Based on these reactions, we were able to identify slow or boring moments and cut them out to keep the laughs going
